Baby, it’s cold outside

And that means the feet go into hiding. Naturally.

But out of sight doesn’t mean out of mind – far from it. The drop in temperature in the winter months means you need to take extra care of those tootsies, not ignore them.

Ever wondered why your feet feel like your chapped lips even though they’ve not been exposed to the wind, snow, and frost? It’s because the blood supply to your feet is affected by the colder temperatures. When our feet are feeling cold, the blood vessels supplying warm blood to the skin have narrowed, reducing the flow of warm blood to the top layers of skin.

Cold weather isn’t the only cause of cold feet though. Sufferers of anaemia, diabetes, and hypothyroidism, for example, can all experience cold feet at the height of summer.

Poor circulationwhether the result of an underlying health issue or due to a sedentary lifestyle - makes it difficult for the warm blood supply to get to your feet regularly. And by wearing tight stockings/tights or ensconcing your feet in thick socks before squeezing them into your winter boots, you're restricting this blood supply.

Give it a rest

Yes, tis the season to party. But remember to give your toenails a rest. When you keep overpainting your toenails it’s difficult for oxygen to penetrate through to the nail bed and your nails have a harder time fighting infections and nail fungus. Nail polish looks great, but it dries out your nails which makes them less flexible and strong. Regularly removing nail polish and applying a fresh coat can maintain the number of bacteria and fungus hibernating underneath.

If you’re worried about the condition of your toenails and feet or would like some tailored foot care advice, contact Five Little Piggies for an initial consultation and treatment.
